“I believe EFT to be one of the biggest breakthroughs in psychology and medicine in a century.”
Dawson Church, PhD, health writer and researcher
EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) – also referred to as “Tapping” or “Meridian Tapping” – is a branch of energy psychology developed by Gary Craig, a personal performance coach, in the early 1990s. Energy psychology is a branch of energy medicine (in the same way that psychology is a branch of Western medicine).
The basic premise underlying EFT is that all the negative emotions we experience are caused by a disruption in the body’s energy systems. We experience this disruption most commonly through stress, anxiety, feeling worn out or overwhelmed, as well as through actual physical pain and illness.
EFT works on the body’s energies via the meridians (energy pathways), while also drawing on modern psychological techniques, including cognitive behavioural therapy, exposure therapy and sensorimotor interventions. EFT involves tapping lightly with the fingertips on specific points on the head, face and upper body, corresponding to certain acupressure points (end points of the meridians), while “tuning in” to and verbalising a specific problem or issue. Tapping during EFT stimulates the acupressure points, causing energy to move more freely around the body, clearing blockages and rebalancing the energy systems. Once the disruption in the body’s energy systems has been removed in this way, the negative emotion (and any physical effects it has been triggering) will usually diminish.
Many of us today are living stressful lives and our bodies react by being in a permanent low-grade state of fight, flight or freeze (a set of responses that originally evolved in our ancestors to enable them to deal with life-threatening situations). EFT halts the fight, flight or freeze response. It sends signals to the brain, telling it to react with calm, rather than with fear or upset. As a result of practising EFT, many people find that emotional distress and physical symptoms are reduced and may be eliminated.
